The Department of Water and Sanitation kicked off a major drought awareness campaign within KwaZulu-Natal on 24 February 2015, with a launch in the rural Umlalazi Municipality in uThungulu District Municipality. As one of the regions most hard-hit by the drought, the uThungulu District Municipality was targeted by the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane for the launch, which was the start of a week-long campaign in several drought-stricken districts from the north to the south coast of KZN. The launch took place at Nyezane Sportsfield in Ward 17, Umlalazi Municipality, officiated by the District Speaker, Cllr Alice Mthembu.  The programme consisted of a drought awareness programme at the sportsfield and the distribution of drought awareness marketing material. At uThungulu the bus visited Melmoth, Eshowe, Gingindlovu, Mbonambi and uMhlathuze.

THE KING'S EXPERIENCE

Launch of exciting Tourism initiative by uThungulu District

The exciting launch of the uThungulu Tourism Marketing Campaign, The King’s Experience, took place on Friday, 26 September 2014 at the Protea Hotel – The Richards. The event heralds the commemoration of Tourism and Heritage Month and will continue as a summer programme that will culminate in December 2014 with a festive season campaign to promote the district. “The Kings Experience” seeks to promote uThungulu District Municipality as the Ultimate Summer destination for both National and International Tourists. The programme boosts support of local celebrities like Jessica Nkosi and Phindile Gwala who are from the district and are now part of popular Television Shows, Isibaya (Jessica) and Muvhango (Phindile). The programme is in a road trip format where all the destinations visited will be filmed and ultimately produced to be an advert on National Media. The first of its kind for the district, the campaign aims to attract tourists to the region by promoting it as a multi-faceted destination, as opposed to a gateway. The ambassador’s entourage is joined by local celebrities and local D.J’s who are part of this exciting project. Of particular interest to buyers of travel services (tour promoters, hotels and other tourism product owners), is that it markets the region as an ever-growing variety of niche visitor experiences, from cultural and heritage tourism to adventure to community-based agri-tourism and creating challenges and opportunities for mature and emerging destinations alike. Tourism product owners and interested stakeholders were invited to the launch, as well as to join our tour ambassadors on a guided tour of the heritage sites on Saturday 27 September 2014. The tour was a feast of culture, rich history and incredible sights, and members of the public were invited to join the tour by following the bus in their own vehicles.
